Techniques to battle Water damage

Water damage is a very difficult scenario to deal with. Water damage can take place anywhere in any situation or in any season. It can be deceptive. Water penetrates into any crack, outlet, inlet or even the smallest of pores or holes. The detection of water in these areas can often only be discovered with sophisticated moisture detection meters but, how do we get rid of the moisture? Moisture that cannot be detected or left as it is will definitely continue to cause damage. This damage with even the minimum magnitude is bound to cause odours for the least.

We often fail to identify the actual damage that water can inflict. Dripping roofs might deteriorate to effect a fall of a big chunk of concrete on the floor which may be subject to human injury. Porous walls can contaminate water in tanks and storages, hence proving to be a threat for human consumption. There are so many negatives of damages inflicted due to water damage that even chasm of ideas would fall short. The ideology ‘Prevention is better than cure’ is ideal to deal with such problems. Some key techniques and relative tips are listed below-

3 key steps for water damage:

  • Restoring damaged areas
  • Drying affected area
  • Extracting moisture

Restoring damaged areas: Remove the items from damaged area to dry or repair separately. Carpets, padding, drywall, etc. Exposed to water for more than 24 hours must be removed and replaced.

Tips:

  • Drywall should be cut and removed six inches from water level and below to avoid mold growth
  • Mold grows 24 to 48 hours after water damage exposure
  • Consult with mold remediation specialist to prevent mold growth

Drying affected area: Open all windows and doors while drying affected area. Using high velocity fans, space heaters, and de-humidifiers on the affected area for 24 to 48 hours is very effective.

Tips:

  • Check for dryness regularly. While areas may appear dry, many substances retain water beneath their surface
  • Ventilation and Air Circulation is key to properly dry the affected area
  • Move equipment every 4 to 6 hours for optimum results

Extracting moisture:  Using wet-dry vacuums or gas powered automatic pumps, extract the water at a steady pace to avoid untimely pressure changes which could affect the structure of your home in a bad manner.

Tips:

  • Frequently check the integrity of the filters
  • Ensure the drainage pipes and outlets are free of debris
  • Drain into an area that will not cause additional flooding
  • Do not use electrical pumps when immersing in water
